Out of Control

2018
Curatorial Project
Curator team: Frank Cong, Davika Tang & Jack Chen

In the same manner as cross-species viruses can challenge the barrier between human and nonhuman animals, the series Glitch, Noise, Mutation (2015 - ongoing) speculates the emergence of intermedial viruses as a vital tool that can make the boundary between the computational and biological more fluid and can open up new possible forms of being.

The second stage of the series is a curatorial project Out of Control (2018) at Songjiang Art Museum, Shanghai. The exhibition features 12 artists, including Nigel Stanford, Rosa Menkman, Vivian Xu, Xiaolei Tian, etc., whose artistic research looked at glitches and mutations within a series of biological and electronic systems. As part of the Glitch, Noise, Mutation (2015 - ongoing) series, the Out of Control (2018) exhibition examines the introduction of glitches to cybernetic systems as a strategy to negotiate control between human and nonhuman agents and probes what new aesthetics would emerge.

Frank Cong’s Glitch, Noise, Mutation (2015 - ongoing) series now consists of:

Intermedial Infection (2015 - 2016)

Glitch Patterns (2016, 2021)

Out of Control (2018), a curatorial project with Davika Tang & Jack Chen

Out of Control (2018), a curatorial project
